Coleth Fox and Crow Print, 1930
The stencil technique, gouache coloring, and art deco style come together wonderfully here for Coleth. "Maitre du Corbeau" is the tipoff here. The stylish young woman is the fox getting something out of the not-so-beautiful old gentleman. From what I could find on Coleth, this figure seems utterly typical of the artist's work. I find the illustration visually captivating
Collection Biscottes Clément, 1960
Collection Ibled Black and White, 1925
Simple thin cards with nothing on the verso. The image side of the card has "Collection Ibled" at the top along with a number ranging from 375 to 531. The style is sometimes reminiscent of Benjamin Rabier.
Collection Ibled Colored, 1925
Simple thin cards with nothing on the verso. The image side of the card has "Collection Ibled" at the top along with a number ranging from #304 to #582. The style is sometimes reminiscent of Benjamin Rabier. The design of the illustrations of these cards does not replicate the design on the "Collection Ibled" black-and-white cards, which are otherwise in the same format.
Complete set of Feve Tiles, 2011
Complete Set of Lottery Cards, 1900
The colored fable images here are exquisitely done. The number system is regular and consistent. The numbers in the upper left of each image are from 1 to 24. Those in the upper right of each image are from 25 to 48. Those in the lower left of each image are from 49 to 72. The numbers in the lower right of the first nine cards are from 73 through 90. The lower right numbers on the last three cards follow no system I can discern. Stiff board backing, slightly bowed.
"CONVENT" folder
A manilla folder with the word "CONVENT" in red ink. The contents of the folder inlcude: a sheet of paper titled "Repertoire des religieuses du couvent de notre mere des afflictions" (Directory of the nuns of the convent of our mother of afflictions), which appears to be a list of the characters, and a copy of "Sisters of the Crucifixion," a rough draft of Ron Hansen's novel "Mariette of Ecstasy.
Cotton Panels by Juliette Mairel, 1985
1985 8 cotton fabric panels by Juliette Mairel. Paris. 18.5" x 15". Brown, Cream, Yellow, Black.
I find the illustrations exceptionally well done. The creator, captured on the edge of one of our clothes, seems otherwise unknown. The use for these clothes remains unclear to me, but I am delighted that they have not been used before!
Damoiseau cookie tin, 1930
Delta TH in Pastels, 1995
The art work seems to be signed "Dalle" or something similar. It is a heavily pastel scene of the finish line, drawn for young children. The exhausted blue hare wears a runner's shirt. Various birds and mice are at the finish to celebrate the tortoise.
Deux Coqs Royer Nancy, 1907
In Card #1, two men live in peace. By Card #3, they are distracted from their friendship by a woman. "And voila! War is enflamed!" I will include a photo from the web with the others of the series that I will be looking for.
Deux Pigeons Handkerchief, 1970
A red hankerchief portraying a couple in a cage. Underneath them is a french quote that reads "two pigeons loved each other with tender love... -La Fontaine"
Die Grille Künstlerpostkarte No 216, 1930
This an unusual pose and setting for the cicada! Despite the cold weather and her scant clothing, she seems more like a pinup girl than a starving artist! The chromolithographic presentation of color and gestalt is good. The card may be datable by the fact that the recto shares picture and message room, while the entire verso – in German -- is for the addressee and address. This card was never posted.
Dog and Shadow Card, 1896
I am not sure I understand the human application of DS here. Has the child sacrificed a toy, or has the man with the cane given up a real child for a toy? A policeman hurries to the scene. I believe I have found Poulain sponsoring four different kinds of fable cards. The verso has the text of La Fontaine's fable and identifies it as such. The style of these two cards seems similar enough to suspect that they are part of a stock set.
Dust-jacket with an oval illustration of "Le Chat, la Belette et le petit Lapin", 1950
This picture is unusually well done for a simple dust-jacket! The rabbit returns home from school to find his home occupied. Neither will do well in the end. Byrrh offers "le grand vin au quinquina." Are we selling wine to schoolchildren? Is that an artist's signature of "LG" in the lower right?
Earthenware Pot Feve, 2020-12
Fèves do not get any simpler than this! There are good cracks in this pot!
Elephant, Rat, and Cat card, 1930
ETS Artistiques Parisiennes, 1940
The paper color and the artist signature are the same in this card as in "Le Corbeau et le Renard," but the formatting of the title is different. Are we dealing with one series or two, or perhaps with no series but simply occasional single postcards? The color work is exquisite on this card! It makes me think that we have others in this style, but I cannot find them!
Extra Bayeux Tapestry print, 1980
Extra copy of "Le Lion Devenu Vieux", 1880
Extra Fox and Grapes, 1960
F and S MM Pitcher
I presume that this is especially meant as a milk pitcher, but the fable does not augur well for the fate of this pitcher. It is after all differently shaped from the pitcher in the image!
